Life gets busy, so it’s natural to look for shortcuts that make our lives a little less complicated. But there are no shortcuts in preventive dental care, and if you want a healthy smile, you need to take certain steps to protect your oral health
At the office of Jeffrey J. Tibbs, DDS, when we talk about prevention, we aren’t referring to some complicated or time-consuming system you must follow. There are only three primary components to achieving a healthy smile – proper oral hygiene, routine preventive exams and cleanings, and a nutritious diet.
Conscientious at-home oral hygiene is probably the most important of these three because we can’t be with you 24/7. Whether or not you follow through with good habits on your own can make the difference between a healthy smile and a lifetime of complicated problems.
Our gentle, compassionate team provides you with the supportive care you need to feel confident about seeking dental treatment. Preventing problems rather than waiting makes sense because it saves you the time and investment involved with restorative treatments. We believe in educating our patients about the importance of prevention because we would rather see you for a cleaning now than have to treat you for a cavity later.
Proper at-home hygiene is essential, but your prevention plan must also include routine exams with Dr. Tibbs and thorough professional cleanings with one of our experienced dental hygienists.
If you are a new patient, Dr. Tibbs will start by sitting down with you to discuss your concerns and how you would like us to help. Next, he will perform an exam to check for visible problems and screen for oral cancer. These screenings are essential for your health and well being; according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer is highly treatable, with a 90% survival rate if caught in its early stages.
In some cases, we may decide that x-rays would be beneficial. Your safety is extremely important to us, so you can feel comfortable knowing that we only use safe digital x-rays that minimize your exposure to radiation.
If you are diligent about brushing and flossing twice a day, you may wonder why professional cleanings are essential. The fact is that professional cleanings are a necessary supplement to your efforts; no matter how well you brush, you can’t get to all the places around and between your teeth where plaque and tartar linger.
During your cleaning appointment, one of our trained hygienists carefully checks for signs of periodontal disease and will make appropriate recommendations. If mild gum disease (gingivitis) is present, a routine cleaning is usually all that’s needed to get your oral health back on track. If the problem is more advanced, we will work with you to establish a treatment plan to restore your healthy gums. We will also talk to you about good oral hygiene practices and answer any questions you may have.
At the office of Jeffrey J Tibbs, DDS, we are committed to helping you enjoy optimal oral health so you can focus on the things in life that really matter!
