Dental Cleanings & Exams in Winston-Salem

Life gets busy, so it’s natural to look for shortcuts that make our lives a little less complicated. Unfortunately, for many people, this means neglecting much-needed dental care. We all know that it’s important to take care of our teeth, but sometimes our schedules and competing priorities make it hard to stay regular on our preventive dental exams.

The truth is that there are no shortcuts in preventive dental care, which means that you need to actively protect your smile if you want it to last.

At the Dental Office of Jeffrey J. Tibbs, DDS, when we talk about prevention, we aren’t referring to some complicated or time-consuming system you must follow. There are only three primary components to achieving a healthy smile: proper oral hygiene, routine preventive dental exams and cleanings, and a healthy, nutritious diet.

Your conscientious, at-home oral hygiene is so important because despite our best efforts to take care of your smile while you are in the dental chair, we can’t be with you 24/7. You need to implement the strategies we teach and use them in your daily dental routine for optimal results. The dental hygiene habits you practice while you are away from our dental office can mean the difference between a healthy smile and a lifetime of complicated problems.

We encourage you to schedule a professional dental cleaning at Jeffrey J. Tibbs, D.D.S., P.A. When you visit our Winston-Salem dental office, we will thoroughly clean your teeth, conduct an oral cancer screening, and update your bitewing, panorama, and full-mouth x-rays as needed.

Preventing Dental Problems

Our gentle, compassionate dental team provides you with the supportive care you need. Preventing problems rather than waiting to treat them makes sense because it saves you the time and investment involved with restorative dental treatments. We believe in educating our patients about the importance of prevention because we would rather see you for an exam now than have to remove an infected tooth down the road.

It’s not always possible to prevent every single dental problem, but your odds of prevention will be greater, and your mouth will be healthier when you stay current on your dental exams. When you have routine dental appointments in Winston-Salem, our professional dental team can frequently screen you for common dental conditions such as periodontal disease. Catching conditions like gum disease early on is cheaper, easier, and less painful than when the conditions progress. It is in your best interest to keep decay and infection at bay, and we will do everything we can to help you.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

By now, you probably understand that our professional in-office dental cleanings and your at-home daily hygiene routine go hand in hand. Your at-home dental hygiene is essential, but your preventive dental plan also needs to include regular dental exams and professional dental cleanings with Dr. Tibbs.

If you are a new dental patient, Dr. Tibbs will start by meeting with you to discuss your concerns and how you would like us to help. This is a good time to share any goals or hopes that you have for your smile so that Dr. Tibbs can explain how preventive dentistry fits in with those goals.

Next, Dr. Tibbs will perform a dental exam to check for visible problems. We will also screen you for oral cancer. These screenings are essential for your health and well-being; according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer is highly treatable, with a 90 percent survival rate if caught in its early stages.

At some of your preventive dental appointments, we will need to take updated dental x-rays. Your safety is critical to us, which is why we can assure you that our dental x-rays use very minimal amounts of radiation that will not harm your health in any way.

Your comprehensive dental exam is the first half of a two-part process that occurs when you come into our Winston-Salem dental office for your routine dental appointment. The other half of your dental appointment is your professional dental cleaning, which is typically performed by one of our skilled dental hygienists.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Regular professional dental cleanings are essential for everyone, no matter how impressive your at-home dental habits are. While your daily brushing and flossing help keep decay at bay, professional dental cleanings are still a necessary supplement to a well-rounded preventive dental treatment plan. The fact is that dental plaque and tartar tend to build up in the nooks and crannies between, in, and around your teeth. These places are hard to reach with just a standard toothbrush — which is where our professional dental instruments come in. We can clean areas in your mouth that are nearly impossible to reach with only at-home care.

During your dental appointment, one of our trained dental hygienists will carefully check for signs or symptoms of periodontal disease and will make appropriate recommendations if needed. If we do, in fact, find mild gum disease (gingivitis), a routine cleaning is usually all that’s needed to get your oral health back on track. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to be seen for these regular dental cleanings! The odds of keeping your smile healthy when you visit us twice a year as recommended are so much greater than your odds of keeping your smile healthy when you only come in for dental appointments sporadically.

Dental Imaging

As we discussed above, regular dental imaging is part of a well-rounded approach to preventive dental care. You will not need bitewing x-rays or other dental images taken at every dental appointment, but obtaining these images will be especially important if you have not visited the dentist in a few years. Once we have a complete set of updated images for your dental chart, you will typically need to have standard bitewing x-rays taken about once a year, which averages out to be during every other dental cleaning. However, we may obtain dental images more or less often than this depending on your individual oral health situation.

Other dental specialists you see or our team will also occasionally take images such as a full-mouth radiograph or even a CBCT scan, which stands for “cone-beam computed tomography.” A CBCT is a three-dimensional image of your mouth that can show us nerves, tooth roots, and bone structure in greater detail. CBCTs are typically most helpful when you are having a tooth, such as a wisdom tooth, extracted or when you are being evaluated for dental implants. Dr. Tibbs will always use his best judgment when determining if and when our dental office needs updated imaging for your treatment plan.
