What Is the Difference Between General Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry?

mom helping daughter brush teethPreventive dentistry relies on a proactive approach to dental care. In other words, preventative maintenance helps your teeth last a lifetime. This includes:

  • Regular dental exams at least twice per year
  • Dental cleanings every six months
  • Periodic digital x-rays

The American Dental Association recommends this. Patients who adhere to this tend to have fewer cavities, fewer incidences of periodontal disease, fewer dental emergencies, and a reduced incidence of tooth loss.

However, we customize our treatment plans to meet your unique oral health issues, so appointment frequency varies based on your preventive dentistry needs.

If preventive dentistry is maintenance, general dentistry is “on the spot” safeguarding. General dentistry treats issues that arise periodically.

Our Winston-Salem, NC general dentist, may utilize one or more of the following general dentistry treatments or procedures based on your situation:

  • Root canal
  • Filling
  • Dental extraction

What Are My Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth?

When you lose a tooth, it’s critical to have it replaced as soon as possible. A gap in your smile is unattractive, but that’s not your biggest problem. You may find it difficult to speak clearly, and a missing tooth can make eating your favorite foods difficult or impossible.

A missing tooth also creates oral health problems that result in complicated treatments. The teeth adjacent to the space can drift, causing alignment issues that may eventually require orthodontics.

At our dental office, we offer tooth replacement solutions to fit your individual needs.

Full and partial dentures are a popular option because they work well for nearly everyone. If you resist the idea of dentures, you should know that technology and materials have dramatically improved their look, fit, and feel.

Dental implants are an ideal replacement because the implant post is rooted in your jaw and creates a stable base for the restoration we attach to it. We often use crowns to provide a function to your implant, but you can also choose fixed bridges and complete or partial dentures if you have multiple missing teeth.

Tooth replacement in Winston-Salem, NC is what we do best!

COVID-19 Information

We hope this finds you and your family in good health. Our community has been through a lot over the last few months, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your safety.

Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice, and you may have seen this during your visits to our office. Our infection control processes are made so that when you receive care, it’s both safe and comfortable. We want to tell you about the infection control procedures we follow in our practice to keep patients and staff safe.

Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued.

You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and staff. For example:

  • Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions.
  • You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office.
  • We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office.
  • You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.
  • You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys, and so forth since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.

How We Manage Appointments

Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.

We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you and reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you and every patient safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at 336-765-7477.
