 Following Oral Surgery:

ü Bite on gauze (which was placed in your mouth following surgery) for 30 minutes.

ü Bleeding after the removal of teeth or other surgery is normal and may continue for some time.  If bleeding is excessive, bite with steady pressure for 30 minutes on a folded gauze pad placed against the bleeding area.  If bleeding does not slow down or stop, call the office for further instructions.

ü If given prescription(s), remember to fill promptly and take exactly as directed to help prevent infection, swelling, and pain. If you develop hives or rash, discontinue all medication and contact the office.

ü The day of surgery:

    • Do NOT rinse your mouth
    • Do NOT swish vigorously
    • Do NOT spit
    • Do NOT smoke
    •  Do NOT drink through a straw

Doing any of the above may dislodge the blood clot and interrupt normal healing.

ü Apply an ice bag to face over operated area for the first 24 hours after surgery (20 minutes on and 20 minutes off).  Some swelling is to be expected for up to 48 hours following surgery.

ü To help the healing process, try not to miss a meal following surgery.  Soft foods and large amounts of liquids are suggested for the first 24 hours after surgery.

ü The day after surgery rinse the mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in a full glass of warm water) after each meal and at bedtime.  The teeth should be brushed as usual except for the surgical area.

Swelling, discomfort, and restricted jaw function are normal and may be minimized by following the above aftercare instructions.
